Balinese architecture is influenced by Balinese lifestyles, spatial organization, communal-based social interactions, as well as philosophy and spirituality.

Most of this is due to Balinese Hinduism. The tripartite divisions are a recurring feature in Balinese design. 

Traditional Balinese architecture follows stringent and sacred architectural standards, allowing plenty of open space and consisting of a large courtyard with numerous modest pavilions, surrounded by a wall to keep evil spirits out and guarded by guardian statues.
